Improving your website's Search Engine Optimisation

DIY SEO using your Pegboard CMS!

Your Pegboard Website is finely tuned for SEO. Two aspects of successful SEO are Meta Descriptions and Page Titles. These are becoming more and more important in directing users to your website (and not your competitors!). With the Pegboard CMS, you have the tools to insert this information yourself quickly and easily.

Meta Descriptions for Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Meta Descriptions are a short description about your web page that gives users a clear idea of the URL's content, and is an easy way to improve your website’s visibility in Google and other Search Engines Search Results. The user is directed to good results faster and reduces the click-and-backtrack behavior that frustrates visitors and inflates web traffic metrics.

The Meta Description isn't viewable on your website but is implemented in the back-end of your site for the Search Engines to crawl and display where necessary.

To add a Meta Description to a page on your website:

  1. Login into your Pegboard Console
  2. Right-click the page in the site-tree you wish to add a Meta Description to and click “Edit Details”
  3. Under the are called “Details” at the top of the page, you will see an area called “Search Engine Optimisation”. Enter your Meta Description text in the “Description” text area.
  4. Click Save & Close.

Tips for Meta Description writing:

  • Make them descriptive!
  • Create descriptions that accurately describe each specific page. Use a general description for your home page and specific description for each internal page.
  • If you don’t have time to do every page, do the most important pages first
  • Avoid duplication of words – if your page title already has a word in it, avoid using this word again in your Description. Use your description as an opportunity to insert new/different/enticing words
  • If your page is a product page which includes the product price, place the price in the description

Page Titles for Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

With the display of increasingly sophisticated search engine results, the way your listing displays in the 'organic' (non-paid) listings is crucial in driving people to your website. Search engines place a high value on good page titles that accurately describe your page. The Page Title on the Discover Me Design home page is highlighted in orange below:

Page Title in Search Engine Optimisation

Like the Meta Description, the Page title should be a useful descriptor of what the page contains and should contain between 60 and 80 characters. The page title provides an opportunity for you to include some Keywords.

You can easily insert a Page Title of each of you website pages in your Pegboard Console.

  1. Login into your Pegboard Console
  2. Right-click the page in the site-tree you wish to add a Page Title to and click “Edit Details”
  3. Under the are called “Details” at the top of the page, you will see an area called “Search Engine Optimisation”. Enter your Page Title text in the “Title” text field.
  4. Click Save & Close.

Tips for Page Title writing:

  • Make it informative and specific to a page. Using “Welcome to our website” will not provide viewers an idea of what you area about and won’t rank well for any keywords. Nor will “What we do” or “Who we are”. Note - these are fine to use as navigation buttons.
  • 60 to 80 characters long
  • Make it enticing and interesting – this will improve your visibility amongs the other search results
  • Include keywords (in context!)
